From Across the Waters

Hey, this is Alyssa here!

Contrary to what most people think, I actually AM preparing in my own way for this sailing adventure. My family is in California living on a boat while I am going to University. As my dad pointed out earlier though, I will be joining them after this semester. The thing that my dad failed to point out, however, is the fact that the school I am going to is the most culturally and ethnically diverse University in North America, located in Hawaii.

The very special thing about this place is that many of the people I meet come from the very same places that we will be sailing to. I have been learning Polynesian dance, different languages, eating different foods, playing in flooding rainstorms, going on hikes and even connecting with people who’s family members we may be able to meet up with.

Where I live

Already, I am more comfortable being the only white person at the table, and even tend to take on some of the slang from the various islands when I hang around those certain people. I have even been seriously asked if the hale (hall-ay) we live in has ghosts. There are all different types of traditions and beliefs, and I plan on learning as much as I can before I set out there. My family may know a lot more than me sailing-wise, but when it comes to actually reaching the islands, my hope is that I will be in my element.

Although University seems like it could have nothing to do with a crazy sailing adventure, you will soon be surprised! Stay tuned for some campus stories coming you way!

The school side of things… I like studying on my bed. Can you tell I was home schooled?
