Escape to a Cold Canadian Winter

McBride MuseumIn August I came across some information on a short trip to Canada’s Yukon and Northwest Territories. It was the last two provinces and territories that my wife and I had not yet visited in Canada and so it didn’t take me more than a second to make up my mind. The trick was that this trip was for January 4-9, 2019. Not exactly the warmest time of the year to head North to the cooler parts of Canada. Not to worry, it’s not anything a warm jacket and boots can’t solve. Right?

Jan 4, 2019 – Whitehorse, Yukon

The flight from Vancouver to Whitehorse is only two and a half hours. A nice quick and easy flight yet a fairly adventurous and unique destination. We arrived late in the evening but that didn’t stop us from making the most of our Takhini Hot Springsevening. We had made arrangements to go to the Takhini Hot Springs that evening. A must visit location only 30 minutes from Whitehorse. The pools take 14 hours to fill up and are flushed out and re-filled with fresh hot spring water every day. It was surreal to be swimming around in a hot pool with snow around on all sides and a minus 24°C temperature outside. Kirsten and I found a nice warm location to hang out not far from where a jet blast of hot water was entering the pool. It didn’t take long to figure out that I could shape my hair into all sorts of crazy designs as the water literally froze my hair as if it were coated in the strongest hair gel. It was a great late evening to celebrate our first day in the Yukon.
