Day 13 – Canada: Patrick the Hitchhiker (Long Drive Day 2) – Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 – Day 13
Today was a long late drive. We spent the morning taking it easy in Thunder Bay in a church parking lot. It wasn’t until around 3:30 pm that we headed out on our driving for the day. At that time we only drove 10 minutes before reaching our first stop, the Terry Fox Memorial.

Thunder Bay is the place that this inspiring Young Man ended his run across Canada with an artificial leg to raise money for Cancer Research. His run was only ended due to reoccuring Cancer which eventually killed him. It was an inspiring memorial for kids and adults as we had an opportunity to review the life of this man and his goals and dreams with each of our children. They have heard the story of Terry Fox many times and enjoyed this stop that is set on a hill and is a great viewpoint (with an information centre) of Lake Superior.Shortly after a gas fill up for the long drive ahead (drove until Midnight) we saw a hitchiker on the side of the road for the third time as we drove by. We decided we would pick him up and give him a ride. This was a fun experience for us and I’m sure an eye opening experience for Patrick as he spent the rest of the evening (and part of the next morning) with our large family on the way to Sault Ste. Marie. “Click Here to Read Kirsten’s Blog on our Hitchhiker Experience”.
