Amman, Jordan

  The Amman CitadelDay 7 – May 19, 2022

Our final full day of the tour involved a 4-hour drive back to Amman with one stop at the Al Safi Community for Lunch. Here they demonstrated how to prepare a local dish before giving the group their lunch. It was the longest driving day of the tour as far as distance goes, and a final farewell to Jordan.

Once in Amman, I made sure to spend a few hours hiking around to see the main sights of the city. I stopped by the Amman Citadel Hill to view the old pillars and remains on the hilltop of an old Byzantine Church and Umayyad Palace. From this hilltop, I could see the large Roman Theatre below.

It was only a 15-minute hike down the side of the mountain to this other site, where we wandered around the reconstructed Odeon Theatre, which is now used for music concerts. Another 20 minutes away, I walked past the Grand Husseini Mosque to Rainbow street with its themed ornaments hanging above the street. I circled back to the “Umbrella Stairs” to view the colorful umbrellas handing over the stone staircase.

To my disappointment, the umbrellas had all fallen apart and were not more than shreds of fabric hanging above. I couldn’t resist, however, stopping at a small store to get some spices and roasted nuts before heading back to our hotel.Rainbow Street
